CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

MOVING ON UPSTREAM

The sun slid down towards the horizon on the left as Wilder and Zara headed back towards Foxford. They rode in a newly purchased wagon, loaded to the brim with their purchases. It slowly made its way up the road’s gentle slope thanks to a pair of gray horses that had formerly belonged to the Jackdaws.

They led a small caravan of four other wagons. The quartet of drivers had been hired and paid from the sack of gold they’d taken from the small band of extortionists Lesher had brought along to shake down and murder Greedy McCreedy.

“I’ll admit that I’m a little surprised,” Wilder remarked, as he gently tugged the reins to keep the horses moving at a slow, even speed. “I can understand purchasing lots of lumber, or even building stones and components for mortar. But why did we need to buy a bunch of old linen? Or chipped or broken glass, for that matter?”

“Because magic can transform old materials into new ones,” Zara replied. “You’ll see when we get to the spot you want. That is, wherever you decide to set up the first structures for the Wilder Wildlife Sanctuary.”

“Yeah, I’ve been thinking about that.” The wagon jounced over a rough spot, making Zara’s breasts jiggle in a way that made Wilder take his eyes off the road.

“You were saying?” the dryad pressed. She pointedly crossed her arms, compressing her cleavage in a way that made him catch his breath. “Unless your brain is still addled by that enormous fried cutlet you ate at the Blushing Canary. You downed that entire thing in what, four bites?”

“Five bites. I counted. Each bite was, dare I say, better than the last,” Wilder said wistfully. “Even the gravy and the fried potato rounds were magnificent. Cooper and his wife sure as hell know how to cook.”

Zara shook her head. “The potatoes were edible, at least. But everything else…I drank enough ale for two dryads my size! And my mouth still feels like it’s coated in grease!”

“Grease is good for you,” he gently teased her. “All that saturated fat helps shore up those weak-walled arteries around the heart.”

“If you say so. I’m sorry that you don’t like my cooking.”

“Whoa, I never said that,” Wilder said. In truth, he hadn’t been much of a fan of the all-vegetable fare. But above all, he didn’t want to hurt his lover’s feelings. “Maybe it’s a guy thing, we just like meat a lot more. Good protein helps build the muscles. Veggies with leaner cuts than what we had tonight would be best, I think. And remember, I’m a big fan of that ‘aged corn juice’ that you make.”

Who knew dryads could make such damned good bourbon? Wilder mused. And it’s potent stuff, too. Compared to it, Cooper’s ale was like piss water. Tasty, but I pounded down a half-dozen tall pints and I barely got a buzz off of it.

“So I see,” Zara sighed. She leaned back a little, but the springy buckboard seat just wasn’t all that comfortable for longer trips.
